In association with the Butchers Guild of York
York City Centre, September 2018
The York Mystery Plays have a long history, and a lot of the original performance aspects persisted in our 2018 production. The Butchers Guild provided us with a custom-build wagon, which we carted around to four different locations around York's city centre, performing accross two Sundays.
However, although the plays are medieval and we were accompanied round town by a band of traditional musicians, I was free to direct the Crucifixion how I wanted. And so I set about reflecting back to the people on the streets of York a story of persecution, repentance, and love, that was perhaps not as far away from our modern world as we may think.
