By Thomas Middleton (II.ii)
Shakespeare's Globe, January 2019
As part of the MA at RCS, we undertook a magical month's residency at the Globe. Alongside workshops, talks, and classes, the Directing students worked on our own scenes, ultimately performed at a (cold, rainy) sharing at the end of the residency.
I closely interrogated Middleton's knotty language in The Changeling to understand what it told us implicitly about the staging and characters. Meanwhile, I put my own stamp on the scene, fighting to give Beatrice-Joanna power and agency in a world manipulated by men.
