Written by Thomas Middleton (II.ii)
Directed by Katie Smith
Shakespeare's Globe, January 2019
As part of the MA at RCS, we got the amazing opportunity to do a month's residency at the Globe. While taking part in workshops, talks, and rehearsals on text and staging, the directing students worked on our own scenes, to be performed at a (cold, rainy) sharing at the end of the month.
Working on 'The Changeling', I followed in close alignment with Middleton's knotty language to understand what it told us implicitly about the staging and characters. Meanwhile, I put my own stamp on the production, fighting to give Beatrice-Joanna power and agency in a world manipulated by men.
