As part of the Assistant Director role on BYO's summer season, I had the opportunity to curate and direct the covers in their own performance. I had the task of equally showcasing each cast member, helping them make unique and truthful choices, while simultaneously preserving the essence (and, essentially, staging) of the main show.
Alongside rehearsals for the main show, we created a shortened, whistlestop tour of the opera's first three acts, aiming to capture the tone and performance style of the original show, while — hopefully! — crafting personal, organic versions of the the characters.
